Most groups and organizations do well when confronted with normal, familiar problems. They quickly identify the issues before them, efficiently discuss the alternatives and swiftly converge on a solution. However, when confronted with novel situations, recurring issues and unconventional problems, business-as-usual thinking and standard decision-making processes fall apart. Meetings become monologues and good ideas get crowded out by people jostling to get noticed by management.
